Stealing Summer

Impressionist-style painting of a woman with flower basket walking across a meadow.

Story: I venture into the meadow to pick wild flowers, the grasses so tall at this time of year that they almost reach my knees. My basket is small, for I would never take more than a few, but I want to take a little bit of today and put it in a vase on my kitchen table, so the scent of the season will fill my home and my eyes will drink in colour as I do tasks that are mundane. I want this time when there's sunshine and cerulean skies to last forever, and I know it won't, so I need to bring a small part of it inside, to keep it next to me when darkness falls. So forgive me, please, if you think me a thief. Forgive me for stealing summer.
