Story:
I walk through the garden with you, hand in hand, and we laugh as we talk about those we are told walked in this garden before us, a courting couple, just like us, although the expression sounds archaic to my ear.
You stretch out your arm and snap a selfie of us with your phone, the cottage in the background, and the technology seems incongruous here, despite there being so many others doing just the same, and I prefer to imagine a past perfect, just a young man visiting a young woman in her family home, the garden silent but for the secrets they shared in language as heady as the scent of the flowers.
Painted in tribute to William Shakespeare and inspired by Anne Hathaway's Cottage in the village of Shottery, near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway from 1582 until his death in 1616.
