Story: I walk over to the small folding table and chair that sit under the tree, moving them until I am happy with the mix of light and shade. And then I start work, writing in pencil on scrap paper, the sun on my back, my eyes protected from its glare. I discovered a long time ago, quite by chance, that I work better outside. I don't have a good explanation for that, beyond that it feels as if the breeze sweeps away all the clutter in my mind and allows the words to flow. The effect is more profound on sunny summer days, when the garden is at its most colourful and the air is fragrant with the scent of flowers. Your guess is as good as mine as to why that might be the case. One day, I might commission a proper desk – made of teak so it can withstand the elements – but for now, my little table and chair are here to stay. This is a writer's garden.
