Story: I pull the mattress close to the picture window. I am on the tenth floor, and the glass runs from floor to ceiling. There is no furniture in the apartment but for the makeshift bed, and I can sleep where I want for now. So I position myself where I can see the lights that flicker on the bay waters. I have travelled a long way to get here, and I know I'll likely wake up at the wrong time, jet-lagged and, at least for an instant, uncertain of where I am. A darkened back bedroom would offer me no comfort, but here in the front room, as soon as I open my eyes, even if it's still the middle of the night, I will see those lights and everything will become clear. I will know that I am safe. I will know that I have come home.
