Edge of the Gate

A wrought iron gate featuring a tiny ballerina, painted against a pink backdrop.

Story: The gate had stayed closed for years, the house behind it abandoned, obscured by a garden long left to grow wild. It creaked when I opened it, and I remember thinking to myself that I ought to oil the hinges. But the thought flew from my mind, and I stood still, transfixed by her dancing. She balanced en pointe at the edge of the gate, and as she pirouetted, she threw her arms wide open, summoning three tiny birds. I fancied that she was calling them home, telling them the garden they remembered would soon be restored. So don't wonder at me when I stand here, a small can of oil in my hand this time, sneaking glances at the edge of the gate and hoping, hoping that I might catch her dancing again.
