Story: The room where we work is at the back of the building, far away from the main stage. It is a beautiful room – at least I think so – with a wide expanse of floor and lots of light. It didn't always serve as a workspace, and a few vestiges of its former grandeur remain. So we display the hats we create in their own little gallery, and we labour under a crystal chandelier, and we have a sense of place. That last one is important. Because the work is hard and painstaking, and the little reminders of where we are help to keep our goals in mind. So I consider colours and textures carefully. I cut dresses in ways that will move with wearer. I sew sequins by hand with the tiniest stitches. I add crystals that catch the light. It doesn't matter that I'm never the wearer of any of our creations: I've never yearned for the stage. Silk and satin and brocade and velvet, I love how fine fabrics feel in my hands. The costume department is where I want to be.
