Not Just Feathers

Under an embellished tree, a young woman is taken aback by her encounter with a peacock in this original painting.

Story: 'Not again! Honestly, your sort come here seeking me out, yet when I strut over and start a conversation, you act all taken aback!'

'Wow, you can talk!'

'Well, I should hope so! What do you have to say for yourself?'

'I just came here in the hope of seeing your display.'

'Are you really interested only in my plumage? Having met me, don't you think there might be more to me than that?'

'It's only that you're really well known in these parts for your magnificent feathers. I don't mean to say that there's nothing more to you, but—'

'You don't mean to say that there's nothing more to me? Is that the best you can do? Have you thus far ambled through life simply looking to find those things you have been told to seek out? How boring that must be! Do you not wish to make even the tiniest discovery of your own? Do you not wish to be astonished, astounded or amazed? My dear, you have much to learn!'

'May I be so bold as to ask if you might undertake to be my teacher?'

'You may, and I might. That you have made the request shows me that you have potential.'

'Potential?'

'Potential to scratch beneath the surface. Potential to grow!'

'I'm not sure I understand.'

'You're beginning to understand already, my dear. Since we began this discussion of your education, you haven't once mentioned my feathers.'
