Mine

Painting of a peacock in the lantern-lit grounds of a ruined castle.

Story: This is a place you abandoned generations ago, once a castle and now just ruins. But today you came and changed everything, making the grounds glimmer with twinkling lights and filling the crumbling walls with voices and music, an echo of their long-ago past. But now it is silent again, for you are gone, back to solid houses of bricks and concrete slab, and music that plays from earbuds and not out loud.

But this place remembered its heyday, and it called out to me, beckoning with a pull I couldn't resist. It needed me to come here and take possession, the only descendant of those who once strutted proudly in these grounds, wilful and beautiful, the castle mine by blood, my connection to it stronger than that of kings.

And so here I stand, against the backdrop of your walls and your lanterns abandoned, under a moon that you can't claim, and take what you left behind as mine.

Each of us has a legacy bestowed upon us by those who went before, a connection to lives lived long ago as powerful as that to the present moment. History may be forgotten, and possessions may be left behind, but there are little pieces of your past inside you, in the way you think and feel, faithfully handed down in ways perhaps unbeknownst to you or even the givers. So when you feel alone or disconnected, remember your venerable history, and remember that whatever it may be, even if you're not quite sure, it is forever yours.
