No Need for Wishes

A mother leads her daughter towards a wishing well in this original painting.

Story: I hold your hand tightly in mine, but you pull away, determined to force me to let you go. I'd imagined this outing differently. I'd thought you'd be enchanted by the wishing well, but you show no interest in its magic. Instead you look longingly towards the woods, and I know your thoughts are with the squirrels that you so love to feed and the tiny birds that make their homes in the branches of ancient trees. Instead of being disappointed, I am happy. Because you are spirited and independent. Because you know your own mind. Because you love the life you have. Because you may be very young, but already you are grounded – more so than me. You have little use for the penny I gave you before we set off, and that is a good thing. It means that the world feels certain to you, safe and sure. It means you have no need for wishes. And it means that all the wishes I've ever made for you really have come true.
