Story: The garden is small, but it never felt that way when I played there. To me, it was huge, a place where I was an adventurer, free to explore and discover. I sat on the grass, still and silent, a finger on my lips so I'd remember not to make a sound, and watched butterflies dance until they flitted away. I admonished the rabbits in my best schoolteacher voice when they made the very poor decision to eat my mum's flowers. I enticed squirrels from the trees with small offerings of nuts, patiently waiting for them to trust me enough to eat from my hand. And I learned to recognise the shrill chirping that signalled that some of the birds were raising a family. Through it all, my dog was my companion. The squirrels didn't like him, but he didn't care: I made sure he knew he was adored by me. The garden is small – that's what measurements would tell you. But it my heart it takes up a very big space.
