Story: I got in touch to wish you well after another year had passed, kind words for the holiday season, merited by a shared past, I thought, even though in the present our lives do not touch. And you could have chosen to return my sentiments. You might even have chosen to congratulate me on a life constructed by my own hands. Why didn't you just wish me the compliments of the season? Or leave my message ignored and forgotten? But instead you sent barbs, cloaked with good grammar and a careful turn of phrase, barbs designed to dig in and pierce my skin, to break me. But you no longer know me, and perhaps you never really did. Because here I stand, unbroken.
