Story: They told me to get a coffee and they'd call me when they'd made their decision. But I couldn't hear news that could change my life in some samey interior that could be anywhere. One way or the other, I had to learn my fate in a place that was clearly here, rather than anywhere else. So I choose a tea shop like no other, and I ask for a table in the garden, so I'll always remember that it was summer. And instead of coffee, which won't calm my nerves, I order tea and a slice of cake, the comforts of every English childhood. My right hand rests on my phone, ready to pick it up as soon as it rings, and I think of my portfolio, set up in their conference room, and my left hand twists my necklace. It is this tea on tenterhooks that I'll remember. That, and the fact they said 'yes'.
