Stop Me Now

Painting of a woman in a grey semi-abstract gown leaving a party.

Story: I know you felt it too. I know from the way you looked at me, stealing glances when you thought I wasn't looking, the smile that played on your lips every time I caught you: you gave away your secret. Yet I find myself leaving, called to my ride by friends who have somewhere else to be. I can see you, caught up in a conversation with friends of your own that I can't interrupt. Well, not without being obvious. Too obvious for me, anyway. So I walk down the drive, pretending to hurry as my friends beckon, but grateful to the heavy swirls of my skirt that slow me down, because maybe you'll catch a glimpse of me. And maybe you'll run over and start a conversation before I step into the car. Maybe, just maybe, you'll stop me now.
