Offhand

Original painting of a woman as she casts an offhand glance.

Story: For you it was an offhand glance: cool and perhaps even dismissive, your hair already in motion as you started to turn away even as your eyes were on me. You didn't know me, and that was that. For me it was everything: our eyes had met, even if yours had been searching for someone else, and for some reason that still makes no sense, I clung to that, determined to make something of it. I am surprised how things turned out from that beginning, that now you turn your face to catch my eye, your hair sweeping around your face in just the same way, and I know what you're thinking before you can put it into words, your look anything but offhand.
