Story:
The words come out in pieces, stop and start, uncertain, like the jerky movements of a car controlled by a learner driver who hasn't quite mastered the clutch.
I am not sure how you will react to my confidence, for ours has been a romance of fresh air and sunshine, and now I summon clouds to a clear blue sky.
But I know we are at a crossroads, this way or that, no turning back, and I need you to know my story and hear it from me before we choose our path.
So I place a foot on the quicksand, knowing full well that I might sink, taking with me the thing I most treasure.
I steady myself, one hand against the wall, and tread lightly at first, guarded, unwilling to risk my full weight.
When nothing shifts, I press forward, suddenly rushing.
My words tumble over each other, my driving reckless, no brakes, my mind on only my destination.
I am on a mission now.
And it's funny, but I know that I am taking no risk.
I don't need to look up and see your clear-eyed gaze to be sure, for you are still standing here, listening, and that tells me all I need to know.
It was make-or-break time, and now it isn't.
