Butterflies in the Winter Sky

Painting of a seated woman looking up at butterflies in the sky.

Story: When I first sat here, I turned my face to the ground, losing myself in a tangle of my own thoughts, pulling at strands with logic only to render the knots in my mind tighter still. But then something caused me to lift my face to the sky, the tiniest flutter of blue wings seen from the corner of my eye, I fancy; truthfully, I'm not sure. All I know is that when I looked up, in this place devoid of flowers, at this time of year when the breath of the wind has turned cold, I saw butterflies soaring through the clouds. And perhaps that's the thing: maybe not every answer lies where you might think to look for it. Maybe some answers are where you'd least expect to find them. Like butterflies in the winter sky.
