Best Foot Forward

A young woman wears a short dress. One of her feet is bare, while the other is shod in a skyscraper heel. Orignial painting.

Story: I don't feel like going onstage tonight. The rain that's been pelting down all day has left me wanting to curl up in bed with a good book, all cosy and warm. But that's not the sort of evening I signed up for when I chose this life. I try to tell myself that I ought to be grateful for my job, that I should just get on with it; but I'm in a contrary, rebellious mood, and even my own common sense is having trouble getting through. I linger over hair and make-up and climb into my costume slowly, buying time and space for myself. Finally I sit down to put on my skyscraper heels. I get one shoe on and it hits me: I'm an actress, so I'd better start acting. I look down at my outstretched leg, foot still unshod, and smile. Best foot forward. The show must go on.
