Three Swans

Painting of three ballerinas, ready to become three swans in Swan Lake.

Story: I look in the mirror as we exercise at the barre, and the view jars me, for it is as if I see three versions of myself, and I have to look again to be sure which one is really my own reflection. It is strange, this, in a profession where nuances of difference are noticed and all-important, that staging should demand that we be all the same, but such are the contradictions of the corps de ballet. So our make-up is designed to damp down our features, the faces we wear drawn on for the stage, and our costumes almost identical. Soon we will each wear a headdress of white feathers, and we will lose the last vestige of ourselves, and three ballerinas will become three swans.
