Story: I turn sharply away from the one who just now held me close and extend my arm towards him, my hand raised in that universal signal for 'stop'. For a beat I remain perfectly still, allowing my sudden rejection of the one I was supposed to love echo through the auditorium. The pas de deux started with my outstretched arm, but then my hand was extended towards my partner and slipped easily into his, the start of a dance filled with perfectly matched steps and peppered with lifts intended to symbolise absolute trust. This is the easy part now, technically. There is no complex choreography here. But if I get it right, I will break not one heart but two thousand. And that makes it the hardest part of all.
