Story: I select a patch of floor and begin stretching. I cherish this time before class, using it to prepare my body in my own way. I think of it as getting ready to get ready for another day of ballet. Deliberately, I turn my back to the noticeboard. I know the cast list has been posted. The telltale whispers of some of my fellow dancers announce its presence, loud as sirens in the quiet of the practice room. I know better than to look yet. I need to go through my usual routine uninterrupted, and news, whether good or bad, has a way of intruding. So I don't allow myself to wonder whether, in a few minutes, my friends will offer congratulations or commiserations. Instead, I focus on my preparations. Whatever that noticeboard may say, I am a ballerina. This is just another day for me.
