Story: The lighting in here is harsh, and though there is no audience, I feel as if my emotions are on display. You are kind, looking up at me and happily talking about ordinary things as if you haven't noticed my downcast eyes. This is the first time I'll dance this role, and I'm more nervous than excited. That's sometimes just the way it goes. I'll feel better once I'm on the stage; it's when I find myself in this no man's land between class and performance that doubts cloud my mind and worries take on wings, the routine of costume and make-up not distraction enough. Without a word from me, you understand. And as we chat, a sense of calm washes over me. You have forced the issue, and I no longer need to wait for my cue to be okay.
